Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief'
Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief' is a striking clump-forming ornamental grass valued for its arching foliage and richly coloured flower plumes. From late summer, feathery flowerheads emerge in deep red tones above the foliage before gradually fading to softer silvery shades as they mature.
The narrow green leaves form a dense, upright clump and develop warm golden-brown tones in autumn. The foliage and flowerheads can remain attractive well into winter, providing valuable movement, texture and structure when many other plants have faded.
Hardy, reliable and low maintenance, 'Red Chief' performs best in full sun in well-drained soil. Its manageable size makes it ideal for mixed borders, prairie-style planting and smaller spaces where height and seasonal interest are required without excessive spread.
