Matteuccia struthiopteris
Matteuccia struthiopteris is a magnificent deciduous fern, admired for its tall, upright fronds that resemble the elegant plumes of an ostrich feather. The fresh green fronds emerge in spring to form a graceful, vase-shaped clump, bringing bold architectural structure and a lush woodland feel to the garden.
Its distinctive shuttlecock shape makes this one of the finest ferns for adding height, texture and movement to shaded planting schemes. As the season progresses, the fronds create a dense, leafy display that provides an excellent backdrop for hostas, astilbes and other shade-loving perennials.
Thriving in moist, humus-rich soil, Matteuccia struthiopteris is perfect for woodland gardens, damp borders and pondside planting. Easy to grow and low maintenance, it gradually spreads by underground rhizomes to form beautiful naturalistic drifts, making it an outstanding choice for larger shaded areas.
