Mahonia x media 'Winter Sun'
Mahonia x media 'Winter Sun' is a bold evergreen shrub with an upright, architectural habit and glossy, holly-like foliage that provides strong structure throughout the year. From late autumn into early spring, long upright racemes of fragrant golden-yellow flowers rise above the leaves, bringing valuable colour to the winter garden.
The nectar-rich blooms are especially useful to bees and other pollinating insects at a time when relatively few plants are in flower. Its dense evergreen growth also provides useful shelter for wildlife while maintaining year-round interest in borders and woodland-style planting.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, 'Winter Sun' performs particularly well in partial shade and sheltered woodland settings, although it is adaptable to a range of garden conditions. Its strong form makes it an excellent specimen shrub or backdrop plant in larger borders.
