Mahonia aquifolium 'Apollo'
'Mahonia 'Apollo' forms a compact, bushy shrub with a naturally neat habit and glossy evergreen foliage that provides year-round interest. Young shoots emerge in warm copper tones before maturing to deep green, developing attractive purple-brown tints in autumn when grown in sunny positions. In early spring (March-April), this hardy shrub produces abundant clusters of fragrant yellow flowers held in elegant panicles around 10cm long, bringing welcome colour and scent to the garden. Decorative black berries with a soft blue bloom follow from late summer through autumn, adding seasonal interest and wildlife value.
Exceptionally tough and adaptable, it tolerates root competition from nearby trees, cold weather, and urban pollution. Easy to grow and reliable, it thrives in almost any soil, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for borders, hedging, or structure planting.
