Ilex aquifolium 'J C van Tol'
Ilex aquifolium 'J C van Tol' is a handsome evergreen holly with a broadly upright habit and glossy dark green foliage. The leaves are nearly spineless, giving the plant a softer appearance than many traditional hollies, while young shoots emerge with attractive purple colouring.
A self-fertile female variety, 'J C van Tol' produces abundant bright red berries without requiring a separate pollinating partner. Small white flowers appear in late spring, followed by the colourful berries, which provide excellent winter interest and a valuable food source for garden birds.
Hardy, reliable and versatile, 'J C van Tol' is ideal as a specimen tree, for screening or for formal shaping. Its attractive foliage is also excellent for cutting and winter arrangements, and the variety has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
