Hippophae rhamnoides 'Friesdorfer Orange'
Hippophae 'Friesdorfer Orange' is a hardy deciduous shrub valued for its striking crops of bright orange-red berries, silvery-green foliage and naturally robust habit. Unlike many sea buckthorn varieties, it is self-fertile, allowing fruit to be produced without the need for a separate male pollinator.
Small green-yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by abundant orange berries that ripen from late summer into autumn. The vitamin-rich fruits can be used for juices, preserves and syrups, while also providing a valuable food source for garden birds.
Tough and tolerant of exposed conditions, poor soils and coastal locations, 'Friesdorfer Orange' performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Its silvery foliage and colourful autumn berries also make it an attractive ornamental shrub for wildlife gardens, informal hedging and mixed planting.
