Helleborus foetidus
Helleborus foetidus, commonly known as the stinking hellebore, is a hardy evergreen perennial valued for its architectural form and striking winter display. Its finely divided, dark green foliage forms a bold clump, and from January to April it produces clusters of nodding, bell-shaped green flowers, often edged with a hint of purple-red.
Despite its name, this hellebore is not unpleasant in the garden and is highly regarded for its toughness and reliability. It thrives in partial shade and well-drained soil, adding early colour and texture when few other plants are in bloom. Long-lived and low maintenance, it is particularly effective in woodland gardens, shaded borders, or naturalised planting schemes. Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
