Gaultheria mucronata 'Signal'
Gaultheria mucronata 'Signal', formerly known as Pernettya 'Signal', is a compact female evergreen shrub with a dense, bushy habit. Its small, glossy dark green leaves have prickly tips and provide useful colour, texture and structure throughout the year.
Clusters of small, white, urn-shaped flowers appear in late spring and early summer. When pollinated by a compatible male plant, these develop into large, bright scarlet-red berries that ripen in autumn and remain decorative into winter, standing out against the dark foliage.
Hardy and easy to maintain, 'Signal' is ideal for ericaceous borders, woodland edges and patio containers. Grow in moist, well-drained acidic soil in partial shade, or in full sun where the soil stays consistently moist. Use ericaceous compost in pots and plant a male Gaultheria mucronata nearby for reliable fruiting.
