Dryopteris affinis
Dryopteris affinis is a robust British native fern forming a bold shuttlecock of upright to gently arching fronds. Bright yellow-green young growth unfurls in spring before maturing to rich green, with golden-brown scales adding distinctive detail along the stems.
Its finely divided, semi-evergreen foliage provides lasting texture and architectural structure, remaining attractive for much of the year in sheltered gardens. This handsome fern combines beautifully with hostas, hellebores and other shade-loving perennials in woodland gardens and shaded borders.
Hardy, reliable and easy to grow, Golden Male Fern thrives in partial or full shade with humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates periods of dry shade, although regular watering during its first growing season and a mulch of garden compost will help it establish well.
