Cyclamen persicum 'Halios Scarlet Red'
Cyclamen persicum 'Halios Scarlet Red' is a flowering houseplant with large scarlet-red blooms held above a rounded mound of silver-marbled green foliage. Its swept-back petals and strong flower stems create a colourful display through autumn and winter, often continuing into early spring in suitable conditions.
Best enjoyed in a cool, bright room, this large-flowered cyclamen suits windowsills, tabletops and seasonal indoor arrangements. It can also provide temporary colour in sheltered outdoor containers during mild weather, but should be brought under cover before frost and protected from persistent rain.
- Other names: Persian Cyclamen, Florist's Cyclamen
- Useful to know: Toxic if ingested - keep away from pets and children
- Feature: Large scarlet-red flowers above silver-marbled foliage
- Care: Keep cool and protect from frost; leaves may die back during summer dormancy
- Eventual size: Approximately 35–40cm tall and 25–30cm wide, depending on growing conditions
- Origins: A cultivated variety of Cyclamen persicum, native to the eastern Mediterranean
Cyclamen Care
Light: Provide bright, indirect light, avoiding strong direct sunshine.
Water: Water when the compost surface starts to dry. Stand the pot briefly in shallow water, then drain thoroughly. Avoid wetting the crown or leaving the pot standing in water.
Humidity: Moderate humidity and gentle ventilation are suitable. Avoid misting flowers and foliage.
Temperature: Cool conditions around 10–16°C help prolong flowering. Keep away from radiators, hot rooms and frost.
Feeding: Apply a low-nitrogen liquid fertiliser fortnightly during active growth, following the product instructions.
Flower care: Remove faded flowers and yellow leaves by gently twisting and pulling their stems away from the base.
Dormancy: Reduce watering as the leaves yellow after flowering. Keep almost dry during summer dormancy, then gradually resume watering when new growth appears in autumn.
Experience level: Moderate
