Chimonanthus praecox 'Grandiflorus'
Chimonanthus 'Grandiflorus' is a beautifully scented deciduous shrub, producing delicate, translucent yellow flowers on bare branches during the depths of winter. The waxy, nodding blooms are highlighted by rich red to purple centres and release a wonderfully fresh fragrance.
Flowering from midwinter into March, 'Grandiflorus' provides valuable colour and scent at a time when relatively few other garden plants are in bloom. The flowers appear before the fresh green foliage emerges in spring, making the winter display particularly striking.
Best grown in a sunny, sheltered position, this choice form of wintersweet is particularly effective near paths, entrances and seating areas where its fragrance can be fully appreciated. Once established, it forms an attractive, upright shrub and also provides an early source of interest for pollinating insects.
