Vaccinium corymbosum 'Duke'
Blueberry 'Duke' is a highly productive early-season variety valued for its large, firm berries with a sweet, mild flavour. The fruits ripen uniformly, making harvesting easy, and their firm texture helps them store well for fresh eating, baking, or freezing. Spring brings clusters of pretty white, bell-shaped flowers, followed by a heavy crop of berries early in the summer season.
A vigorous yet upright deciduous shrub, ‘Duke’ is one of the most reliable performers for UK gardens. Its green summer foliage turns vivid shades of yellow and orange in autumn, adding ornamental appeal. Ideal for borders or containers, it thrives in acidic, moist but well-drained soil.

How to Grow Blueberries
Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, blueberries are healthy, delicious, and very easy to grow. They are also ornamental, producing pretty flowers in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn. Even a single large pot in a sunny spot is enough to grow your own blueberries.
Which Blueberries to Plant
Although most blueberries are partly self-pollinating, they crop far better when grown with another variety for cross-pollination. If you have space for only one plant, these varieties still perform reliably:
- Bluecrop – dependable mid-season cropping and good disease resistance.
- Patriot – vigorous, hardy and productive.
- Gold Traube – heavy cropping with an upright habit.
- Northland – the hardiest variety, compact and very fruitful.

Where to Plant Blueberries
Blueberries need acidic soil with a pH of around 5.5. You can check your soil using a simple pH test kit available in-store. If the soil is too alkaline, sulphur chips can be added at least one month before planting, but the easiest and most reliable option is to grow blueberries in pots filled with ericaceous compost.
For the best crops and strong autumn colour, position plants in a sunny, sheltered spot.
How to Care for Blueberries
- Water container-grown plants regularly, preferably with rainwater, especially in hard-water areas.
- Feed pot-grown plants monthly with an ericaceous liquid fertiliser. Mulch garden-grown plants in autumn with pine needles or leaf mould and apply a high-nitrogen feed in late winter.
- Protect ripening fruit from birds by netting plants securely from top to ground level.
- Prune annually from the plant’s third year onwards, removing around one quarter of older stems in late winter or early spring.
Blueberries are ready to harvest from midsummer to early autumn. Ripe berries develop a deep, dusty blue colour and can be enjoyed fresh, cooked, or frozen.
