Betula pendula is a graceful native deciduous tree, widely known as silver birch and admired for its distinctive silvery-white bark and elegant, lightly weeping branches. Its fine-textured canopy gives the tree an airy appearance while allowing dappled light to reach the ground beneath.

In spring, the branches carry slender catkins, followed by fresh green foliage that turns yellow in autumn. The pale bark becomes increasingly ornamental as the tree matures, providing valuable structure and interest during the winter months.

Well suited to naturalistic planting, wildlife gardens and larger borders, silver birch works particularly well as a specimen tree or in informal groups. Its relatively light canopy also makes it a useful choice where underplanting with shrubs, grasses or perennials is desired.
