Berberis 'Red Chief' is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub with arching stems clothed in rich red-purple foliage. Its bold colouring provides strong contrast and structure in the garden from spring through to autumn.
Small yellow flowers appear in late spring, standing out beautifully against the dark leaves and providing nectar for pollinating insects. These are followed by bright red berries in autumn, extending the season of interest into the colder months.
Tough, reliable and easy to grow, 'Red Chief' is ideal for mixed borders, specimen planting or clipping into a dense, colourful hedge. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and performs well in most well-drained soils.
