Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Red Chief' is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub with arching stems clothed in rich red-purple foliage throughout the growing season. In late spring, small yellow flowers appear, providing gentle contrast against the dark leaves.
As autumn arrives, these flowers are followed by bright red berries that add colour and interest well into the colder months. Tough, reliable and easy to grow, ‘Red Chief’ works beautifully in mixed borders or clipped into a dense, colourful low hedge.
