Aquilegia alpina
Aquilegia alpina is a graceful, clump-forming perennial with nodding violet-blue flowers and distinctive spurred petals. The blooms are carried on slender, branching stems above softly divided blue-green foliage, creating an airy display that brings colour and movement to spring planting.
Flowering from May to June, this alpine columbine is ideal for cottage gardens, rockeries and lightly shaded woodland borders. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the delicate foliage combines beautifully with hardy geraniums, grasses and other early-season perennials.
Hardy and easy to grow, Aquilegia alpina thrives in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Avoid allowing the roots to dry out completely. Remove spent flower stems for a tidy appearance, or leave a few seed heads to encourage natural self-seeding.
