Veronicastrum virginicum
Veronicastrum virginicum is a tall, elegant herbaceous perennial producing slender, branching spikes of tiny flowers above strong upright stems in summer. The flowers are typically white, sometimes developing soft pink or purple tones, and create a light, airy effect in the border.
Narrow, pointed green leaves are arranged in distinctive whorls around the stems, giving the plant an attractive architectural appearance even before flowering. Its tall, vertical habit makes it particularly effective towards the middle or back of mixed borders and in prairie-style planting schemes.
Best grown in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but well drained. Fully hardy and clump forming, Veronicastrum is an excellent choice for adding height, structure and summer interest to cottage gardens, wildlife gardens and perennial borders.
