Sarcococca hookeriana 'Purple Gem' ℗ is a compact evergreen shrub combining strong winter fragrance with attractive year-round foliage. From January to March, clusters of highly scented white flowers tipped with purple appear among the glossy dark green leaves, bringing valuable colour and perfume to the winter garden.
Young stems emerge in rich purple-red tones, adding further contrast before maturing, while glossy black berries may follow the flowers and provide seasonal interest for birds. Its neat, rounded habit makes 'Purple Gem' especially useful where a compact evergreen structure is required.
Hardy, easy to grow and low maintenance, 'Purple Gem' performs best in partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. It is ideal for shaded borders, low hedging and containers, particularly near paths or entrances where its winter fragrance can be fully appreciated.
