Quercus ilex, commonly known as the Holm Oak, is a majestic evergreen tree with a dense, rounded crown and leathery, dark green foliage. Native to the Mediterranean, it is highly valued in the UK for its resilience and ability to provide year-round shelter and structure in both coastal and inland landscapes. The leaves are glossy on top and pale beneath, giving the tree a distinctive two-tone effect in the breeze.

In spring, clusters of catkins appear, followed by acorns that provide food for birds and wildlife. This long-lived oak is tolerant of wind, salt spray, and drought once established, making it especially suited for coastal planting. It is widely planted as a specimen tree, in avenues, or clipped into large evergreen screens, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its exceptional performance.
