Prunus serrula
Prunus serrula is a striking ornamental cherry grown primarily for its highly polished, mahogany-brown bark, which peels in glossy bands to reveal a rich coppery sheen beneath. The bark provides outstanding winter interest, making this tree a superb architectural feature when the branches are bare.
In spring, small white flowers appear among fresh green foliage, adding light seasonal detail. As autumn approaches, the leaves turn warm shades of yellow before falling to once again reveal the beautiful, gleaming trunk. Best planted as a specimen tree where its bark can be fully appreciated, it thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or light shade.
