Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head'
Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head' is a striking deciduous ornamental grass producing large, bottlebrush-like flower plumes from mid to late summer. Deep purple buds open into impressive smoky-purple flowerheads, held above a dense mound of fresh green foliage.
The substantial plumes can reach around 20-25cm long and remain attractive for several months, bringing movement, texture and height to borders and prairie-style planting. As temperatures cool in autumn, the foliage develops warm golden tones, extending the season of interest.
Best grown in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, 'Red Head' is relatively drought tolerant once established and is also resistant to deer. Its bold flowerheads make it an excellent choice for mixed borders, naturalistic planting and contemporary garden schemes.
