Parodia microsperma
Parodia microsperma is a compact, characterful cactus with a rounded to slightly cylindrical body densely covered in fine white, yellow or brown spines, often accompanied by distinctive reddish central spines. Mature plants can produce attractive funnel-shaped flowers in spring and summer, most commonly in shades of deep red, orange or yellow.
Usually growing as a solitary plant, although older specimens may occasionally form small clusters, this slow-growing cactus is ideal for sunny windowsills and cactus collections. Its naturally compact habit makes it particularly well suited to smaller pots and bright indoor spaces.
- Other names: Golden Tom Thumb, Tom Thumb
- Useful to know: Non-toxic, but the sharp spines should be kept away from pets and children
- Feature: Compact spiny growth with colourful spring and summer flowers
- Eventual height: Typically grows to around 10-20cm
- Origins: Argentina, particularly Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Rioja and surrounding regions, with populations also reported in Bolivia
