Parodia haselbergii
Parodia haselbergii is a compact, globular cactus covered in dense white to silvery spines, creating an attractive textured appearance. Formerly widely grown under the name Notocactus haselbergii, it is particularly prized for its vibrant red to orange flowers, which often appear early in the year and can remain open for an unusually long period.
Native to the mountainous regions of southern Brazil, this small cactus prefers a bright position with protection from intense summer sunshine. A very free-draining compost and careful watering are essential, particularly during winter when the plant should be kept almost completely dry.
- Other names: Scarlet Ball Cactus, Notocactus haselbergii
- Useful to know: Generally considered non-toxic, but handle carefully due to the sharp spines
- Feature: Long-lasting vibrant red to orange flowers, often appearing early in the year
- Eventual height: Can grow to approximately 10-15cm
- Origins: Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil
