Opuntia microdasys rufida
Opuntia microdasys rufida is a compact, pad-forming cactus with bright green, oval pads densely covered in rusty-red glochids rather than traditional spines. These fine bristles give the pads a distinctive red-dotted appearance—striking to look at but deceptively barbed—making this variety a real standout in cactus collections.
Best grown in very bright, sunny positions, this architectural cactus is ideal for windowsills, conservatories, or warm indoor spaces. Mature plants may produce yellow flowers in summer, sometimes followed by small purple fruits, adding extra seasonal interest to its bold, sculptural form.
- Other names: Cinnamon Bunny Ears, Red Bunny Ears Cactus
- Useful to know: Not safe for pets – glochids and pads can cause irritation
- Eventual height: 40–60cm tall, spreading wider over time
- Origins: Mexico
Opuntia Care Sheet
Light: Requires full sun for compact growth and rich pad colour. A south-facing window is ideal indoors.
Water: Water sparingly in summer, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep almost dry in winter.
Soil/Nutrition: Use a gritty, well-draining cactus mix. Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted cactus fertiliser.
Humidity: Prefers dry air – avoid humid conditions.
Pruning & Propagation: Pads can be carefully removed with tongs and rooted in dry cactus soil. Wear gloves to avoid glochid irritation.
Experience level: Beginner with caution
