Opuntia microdasys 'Indigo'
Opuntia microdasys 'Indigo' is a distinctive Bunny Ears Cactus with flattened, oval pads in grey-green tones, sometimes developing an indigo tint along their edges. Regular clusters of fine brown bristles create a dotted pattern across the pads, adding texture to its sculptural outline.
Well suited to sunny windowsills and cactus collections, this branching plant gradually develops into a bushy specimen. Its low watering needs make it straightforward to care for, provided it receives plenty of sunlight and grows in freely draining compost.
- Other names: Bunny Ears Cactus, Opuntia microdasys rufida 'Indigo'
- Feature: Grey-green pads with brown bristle clusters and potential indigo colouring along the edges
- Handling: Tiny barbed bristles detach easily and can irritate skin and eyes; avoid direct contact and keep away from pets and children
- Care: Provide plenty of sunlight and allow the compost to dry completely between waterings
- Eventual height: Approximately 50–100cm over time
- Origins: Cultivated selection; the species is native to Mexico
Opuntia Care
Light: Provide a very bright position with direct sunshine. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually to prevent scorching.
Water: During active growth, water thoroughly only when the compost has dried completely. Allow excess water to drain away and never leave the pot standing in water.
Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is suitable. Avoid misting and provide good air circulation.
Temperature: Keep frost-free and protect from cold draughts. A cool, bright winter position is suitable if the compost remains dry.
Feeding: Apply a cactus fertiliser a few times during active growth, following the product instructions. Do not feed during winter rest.
Repotting: Repot when necessary using gritty, freely draining cactus compost and a pot with drainage holes. Avoid touching the pads directly.
Winter care: Reduce watering substantially as growth slows. Keep dry when resting in cool conditions.
Handling: Use suitable tools and protective equipment when moving or repotting. The fine bristles can detach with very light contact.
