Malus x moerlandsii 'Profusion'

Malus 'Profusion'

Malus 'Profusion' is a colourful deciduous crab apple grown for its rich spring blossom, attractive foliage and decorative autumn fruits. From April to May, deep red buds open into masses of reddish-purple flowers, softening towards pink as they mature and attracting bees and other pollinating insects.

The young leaves emerge in coppery-purple shades before becoming bronze-green through summer. Small, dark purple crab apples develop after flowering, ripening to deep red in autumn and providing food for birds. Brownish-red autumn foliage adds another layer of seasonal colour before the leaves fall.

With its spreading crown and gently arching branches, 'Profusion' makes an attractive specimen for lawns, mixed borders and wildlife gardens. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates clay provided drainage is adequate, and benefits from regular watering while establishing. Allow room for its canopy to develop.
