Laurus nobilis
Laurus nobilis, commonly known as the Bay Laurel, is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its aromatic foliage and elegant form. Its glossy, dark green leaves are widely used in cooking, releasing a distinctive fragrance that enhances soups, stews, and sauces. In spring, clusters of small yellow-green flowers appear, followed by dark berries that add seasonal interest.
Hardy and long-lived, Laurus nobilis can be grown as a specimen shrub, clipped into formal topiary shapes, or trained as a hedge. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, performing particularly well in containers on patios or courtyards. In colder regions, provide some winter protection from harsh frosts.
