Kalanchoe tomentosa
Kalanchoe tomentosa, commonly known as the Panda Plant, is a slow-growing succulent with thick, silvery-green leaves covered in fine, velvety hairs. Contrasting chocolate-brown markings along the edges and tips give the foliage its distinctive appearance.
Its upright growth and softly textured leaves make it an attractive addition to bright windowsills and indoor succulent collections. Easy to care for, it stores water in its fleshy foliage and needs free-draining compost with time to dry between waterings. Mature plants can develop branching, woody stems, while flowering is uncommon indoors.
- Other names: Panda Plant, Pussy Ears, Plush Plant
- Useful to know: Toxic if ingested - keep away from pets and children
- Feature: Velvety silver-green leaves with chocolate-brown edges and tips
- Eventual height: Approximately 50-100cm over time, usually smaller in indoor pots
- Origins: Madagascar
Kalanchoe Care
Light: Provide bright light with some direct sunshine. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually and protect from intense midday sun through glass if the leaves show signs of scorching.
Water: Allow the compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. Water the compost directly, avoiding the hairy foliage, and never leave the pot standing in water.
Humidity: Normal household humidity is suitable. Do not mist; keep the foliage dry and provide good air circulation.
Temperature: Normal indoor temperatures are suitable. Keep above 10°C and protect from frost and cold draughts.
Feeding: Apply a cactus and succulent fertiliser two or three times during active growth, following the manufacturer's recommended rate.
Repotting: Use free-draining, peat-free cactus and succulent compost in a pot with drainage holes. Repot when the roots have filled the container, choosing a pot only slightly larger.
Winter care: Keep in the brightest available position and reduce watering as growth slows. Allow the compost to dry before watering again.
