Davidia involucrata
Davidia involucrata is a distinctive deciduous tree best known for its extraordinary spring display of large, creamy-white bracts that hang around the small flower heads. These flutter in the breeze like handkerchiefs, giving rise to its familiar common name and creating a striking feature in late spring.
The broad, heart-shaped green leaves form an attractive rounded canopy through summer, while the flowers are followed by rounded green fruits that mature to brown. As the tree develops, its graceful branching habit and unusual flowering display make it an impressive specimen for larger gardens.
Best grown in a sheltered position in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, Davidia performs well in full sun or partial shade. Young trees can take several years to begin flowering, but once established they provide a spectacular and memorable seasonal display.
