Cytisus battandieri

Cytisus battandieri

Cytisus battandieri is a distinctive deciduous shrub prized for its upright clusters of golden-yellow flowers and unusual pineapple fragrance. Flowering in June and July, the densely packed blooms stand above silky, silver-grey foliage, creating a striking combination of colour, texture and scent.

Native to Morocco, this handsome broom develops a broad, rounded habit with gracefully spreading branches. Its leaves are divided into three soft, silvery leaflets that remain decorative throughout the growing season. It makes an attractive specimen for sunny borders, Mediterranean-style gardens or training against a warm wall, ideally near a path where its fragrance can be enjoyed.

Grow in full sun in well-drained soil, choosing a sheltered position protected from cold winds. Drought tolerant once established, it copes well with relatively poor soil and requires little routine attention. Prune after flowering where necessary to maintain an attractive framework.
