Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'
Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' is a striking deciduous shrub prized for its deep wine-purple foliage, which provides bold colour and contrast throughout the growing season. The rounded leaves develop their richest tones in full sun before turning vivid scarlet and red in autumn.
During summer, airy pink flower plumes rise above the foliage, creating the soft, hazy effect that gives Cotinus its common name of Smoke Tree. These delicate plumes contrast beautifully with the dark leaves and add texture and movement to planting schemes.
With its broad, bushy habit, 'Royal Purple' makes an excellent specimen shrub or structural feature within mixed borders. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil, where both foliage colour and flowering are at their strongest.
