Clematis patens 'Shin-Shigyoku'
Clematis patens 'Shin-Shigyoku' is a compact Japanese deciduous climber producing sumptuous double deep violet flowers with curved tepals and a contrasting silvery underside from late spring to early summer, often repeating in late summer. Later flowers can occasionally be single, while the pale reverse to the tepals adds extra depth to the intensely coloured double blooms.
It is particularly well suited to trellis, obelisks, containers and light-coloured walls where the dark flowers stand out strongly.
Plant in sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, keeping the roots cool. Prune lightly and remove spent flowers after the first flush to encourage repeat flowering.
