Cercidiphyllum japonicum
Cercidiphyllum japonicum is an elegant deciduous tree with a graceful, broadly pyramidal habit and attractive heart-shaped leaves. The young foliage emerges bronze-purple in spring before maturing to fresh blue-green during summer.
In autumn, the leaves develop a spectacular blend of yellow, orange, pink and red tones before falling. As the foliage fades, it often releases a distinctive sweet fragrance reminiscent of burnt sugar or candyfloss, adding another dimension to its seasonal display.
Ideal as a specimen tree for larger gardens, Katsura thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It performs best in a sheltered position where the colourful foliage and elegant branching structure can be fully appreciated.
