Alocasia baginda 'Dragon Scale Mint'
Alocasia 'Dragon Scale Mint' is a striking foliage plant with thick, sculptural leaves patterned in soft mint, grey-green and deeper green. Dark, sunken veins contrast with the raised leaf surface, creating the distinctive dragon-scale texture that gives this variety its name.
The marbled colouring varies from leaf to leaf, making each plant individual. Its compact habit suits bright indoor displays, where warmth, humidity and careful watering help maintain the attractive foliage.
- Other names: Mint Dragon Scale, Alocasia 'Dragon Scale' Mint Variegata
- Useful to know: Toxic if ingested - keep away from pets and children
- Feature: Mint-green marbling across thick, textured leaves with prominent dark veins
- Care: Provide warmth, higher humidity and bright, indirect light
- Eventual height: Approximately 30cm indoors, depending on growing conditions
- Origins: Cultivated selection; the species is native to Borneo
Alocasia Care
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Protect the foliage from strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water: Water when the surface of the compost begins to dry, keeping the root ball lightly moist during active growth. Drain thoroughly and never leave the pot standing in water.
Humidity: Prefers higher humidity, ideally around 60% or above, with gentle air circulation. A humidifier can help in dry rooms.
Temperature: Keep warm, ideally between 18–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 16°C, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Feeding: Apply a liquid houseplant fertiliser during active growth, following the product instructions. Stop feeding if growth pauses.
Repotting: Repot when the roots become crowded, using an airy, freely draining houseplant compost with added bark and perlite. Choose a pot with drainage holes.
Winter care: Growth may slow or the plant may become dormant and lose leaves. Reduce watering to match its reduced growth, keeping the compost only slightly moist.
