Allium 'Medusa'
Allium 'Medusa' is a unique ornamental onion prized for its unusual twisting foliage and attractive late-season flowers. Forming a low mound of grey-green leaves that curl and twist at the tips, this distinctive variety takes its name from the snake-like hair of the mythical Medusa, creating interest long before the flowers emerge.
In late summer and early autumn, nodding flower buds rise above the foliage before straightening to reveal rounded clusters of soft amethyst-purple blooms. The flowers are held on sturdy stems above the foliage, providing colour and architectural interest at a valuable time of year when many perennials are beginning to fade.
Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, 'Medusa' is perfect for rock gardens, gravel gardens, borders and containers. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, while deer and rabbits tend to avoid it. Both the foliage and flowers have a gentle onion fragrance when bruised, reflecting its place within the onion family.
