Adromischus alstonii
Adromischus alstonii is a slow-growing succulent with thick, grey-green leaves that may develop attractive purple spotting. Its branching stems become increasingly characterful with age, developing peeling, papery bark that gives mature plants a miniature tree-like appearance.
A distinctive choice for bright windowsills and succulent collections, this compact plant brings unusual texture to small indoor displays. Give it plenty of light, freely draining compost and time to dry thoroughly between waterings.
- Other names: Cotyledon alstonii (former botanical name)
- Feature: Fleshy grey-green leaves with variable purple markings and peeling bark on older stems
- Care: Avoid waterlogged compost and reduce watering during winter
- Eventual height: Up to 30cm
- Origins: Southern Namibia and the Northern Cape, South Africa
Adromischus Care
Light: Provide bright light with some direct sunshine. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually and protect from scorching midday sun through glass.
Water: Allow the compost to dry completely before watering, then let excess water drain away. Never leave the pot standing in water.
Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is suitable. Avoid misting and provide good air circulation.
Temperature: Keep frost-free and protect from cold draughts, particularly when the compost is damp.
Feeding: Apply a diluted cactus fertiliser occasionally during active growth, following the product instructions.
Repotting: Repot only when necessary, using a gritty cactus and succulent compost and a pot with drainage holes.
Winter care: Keep in a bright position and water much less frequently, especially in cooler conditions.
Experience level: Moderate
