Pot-Grown Christmas Tree Care Tips

Keep your pot-grown Christmas tree looking its best

A living Christmas tree brings a little festive magic into your home, with the chance to enjoy it outdoors afterwards. Follow these five simple tips to care for your pot-grown tree throughout Christmas.

  1. Keep it outside until you’re ready

Leave your tree in a sheltered outdoor spot for as long as possible before bringing it indoors. Keep it in its original growing pot and check the compost regularly, watering when needed.

  2. Remove the Climate Bag before displaying

Your tree comes in its growing pot, wrapped in a protective Climate Bag. Remove the bag before bringing it indoors, then place the growing pot inside a decorative cover pot or on a waterproof tray to protect your surfaces.

  3. Choose a cool, bright spot

Position your tree away from radiators, fires and other direct heat sources. A cool, bright room will help it stay in good condition.

  4. Keep the compost moist

Check the compost regularly and water as needed. Allow excess water to drain freely, then empty the cover pot or tray. Keep the compost moist without leaving the roots standing in water.

  5. Keep its indoor stay short

Bring your tree indoors close to Christmas and return it to a sheltered outdoor position soon after the celebrations. A shorter indoor stay gives your living tree the best chance of thriving afterwards.

A living tree needs its roots. Keep your tree in its growing pot throughout the festive season. There is no need to cut the trunk or use a Christmas tree stand.

A home in the garden after Christmas

After Christmas, move your tree into a sheltered outdoor spot so it can adjust to the change in conditions. Continue checking the compost and water when needed.

If you plan to plant it in the garden, choose a position with enough space for its eventual height and spread. Wait until the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged, and keep it watered during dry spells while it establishes.
