Green Friday

Green Friday

Detox from the digital world by immersing yourself in nature and make this ‘Green Friday’ instead of black.

Research has shown that spending time outdoors, gardening and caring for houseplants are good for our mental health and we all know that (particularly this year!) looking after our mental health is more important than ever. Nurturing live plants not only gives a sense of purpose and pride but also a focus and opportunity to learn and grow our own knowledge.

If you would like a change of scenery, come and visit our tranquil houseplant department or take a stroll through the outdoor plant area to admire the plants showing off their winter colours. Alternatively, a longer walk will really help clear your head, one of our favourites locally is around Bolam Lake. With accessible paths for all, stunning trees and an abundance of wildlife to be spotted it is easier to switch off and relax for a couple of hours. Wherever you live, there is bound to be somewhere similar close by.

A new project is always a rewarding task and just because it is winter that doesn’t have to stop garden projects! Wrap up warm and get started on those pots and containers, or the new raised bed you’ve been planning. Just think of all of the delicious home-grown fruit and vegetables you could be enjoying in the new year if you get it built and set up now! Or why not build a bug house in the garden, they can be made with fallen leaves and twigs and are a great way to introduce children to the natural world. If you would rather stay indoors, try making a planted terrarium. Once planted up your terrarium will establish its own mini eco-system that will fascinate you as it grows. Another indoor project perfect for this time of year is Hyacinth bowls. These are easy to make and grow and can be decorated with Christmas decorations to make a beautiful gift this festive season, think plants for presents!

Don't forget, our friendly team are always on hand to offer advice on plants and gardening should you need any help to enjoy 'Green Friday'.
