Sorbus torminalis is a rare native deciduous tree with a broad, rounded crown and distinctive maple-like leaves. The deeply lobed green foliage provides an attractive canopy through spring and summer, often developing warm yellow, orange and crimson tones in autumn.

Clusters of small white flowers appear in late spring and early summer, attracting bees and other pollinating insects. These are followed by small oval brown fruits, traditionally known as chequers, which provide an additional food source for birds and other wildlife.

Best grown in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, the Wild Service Tree is a valuable choice for larger gardens, woodland planting and naturalistic landscapes. Its scaly, fissured bark becomes increasingly characterful with age, adding further ornamental interest to this long-lived native tree.
