Salix helvetica
Salix helvetica is a compact deciduous shrub prized for its attractive silver-grey foliage and neat, bushy habit. The small, oval leaves have softly hairy white undersides, bringing a silvery contrast to borders, rock gardens and patio displays.
In spring, silky silver catkins emerge from golden buds before or alongside the fresh young leaves. Its slow growth and naturally dwarf form make this Swiss Willow particularly useful for smaller gardens, alpine planting and containers where its foliage and seasonal detail can be appreciated close up.
Very hardy and easy to maintain, Salix helvetica grows well in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Keep container plants watered during dry spells and avoid waterlogged conditions. Little pruning is needed beyond removing damaged or unwanted shoots to maintain its tidy shape.
