Azalea 'Sonnenköpfchen'
Azalea 'Sonnenköpfchen', also known as Rhododendron mixtum 'Sonnenköpfchen', is a radiant deciduous azalea producing clusters of golden-yellow double flowers in May. The star-shaped blooms measure 4.5–5.1cm across, each with a slightly darker centre, and release a fresh, sweet fragrance. With 18–21 flowers per truss, the rounded clusters create a glowing, cheerful display.
Similar to its parent Rhododendron luteum 'Narcissiflora' but with larger blooms and denser clusters, ‘Sonnenköpfchen’ combines fragrance, colour, and reliability. Its broad, upright habit reaches around 130cm high and wide after 10 years. In autumn, the foliage turns golden-yellow, extending its seasonal value. Hardy and dependable, it thrives in acidic, moist but well-drained soil and partial shade, ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a specimen shrub.
