Piper crocatum
Piper crocatum is a highly ornamental climbing species grown for its remarkable foliage. The heart-shaped leaves are richly patterned with metallic silver and pink veining against a deep olive-green background, while the undersides display striking shades of burgundy-red. This dramatic contrast gives the plant an almost hand-painted appearance and makes it a favourite among rare plant collectors.
Native to tropical rainforests, Piper crocatum grows as a climbing or scrambling plant and appreciates warmth, humidity and support as it matures. Its colourful foliage provides year-round interest and creates a luxurious tropical feel in indoor plant collections, terrariums or humidity cabinets.

Piper Care Sheet
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and reduce the intensity of the leaf colouring.
Water: Keep compost evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the surface of the compost to dry slightly between waterings and reduce watering during winter.
Soil/Nutrition: Grow in a rich, well-draining houseplant mix containing bark and perlite. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity and performs best above 60% humidity. Ideal for terrariums, plant cabinets or grouping with other tropical plants.
Pruning and propagation: Trim stems to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Propagate easily from stem cuttings taken during the growing season.
