Pedilanthus tithymaloides 'Variegata', commonly known as Variegated Devil's Backbone, is an unusual succulent shrub prized for its distinctive zig-zag stems and colourful variegated foliage. The pointed leaves are splashed with shades of green, cream and white, often developing attractive pink tones along the margins when grown in bright conditions.
Its architectural growth habit makes it a striking statement plant for sunny windowsills and modern interiors. Drought tolerant and easy to care for, this fascinating species combines bold structure with year-round colour and is particularly suited to collectors seeking something a little different.

Pedilanthus Care Sheet
Light: Bright light with some direct sun is ideal. Higher light levels encourage stronger variegation and pink colouring along the leaf margins.
Water: Allow the compost to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering significantly during winter.
Soil/Nutrition: Use a free-draining cactus or succulent compost. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.
Humidity: Average household humidity is sufficient. No additional humidity is required.
Pruning and propagation: Prune stems to maintain shape and encourage branching. Stem cuttings root readily once the cut ends have been allowed to callus.
