Opuntia microdasys rufida
Opuntia microdasys rufida is a compact, pad-forming cactus with bright green, oval pads covered in dense clusters of rusty-red glochids instead of spines. These fine bristles may look soft but can easily irritate skin. Mature plants may produce yellow flowers in summer, followed by small purple fruits. Its striking red-dotted pads make it a standout in cactus collections.

Opuntia Care Sheet
Light: Requires full sun for compact growth and rich pad colour. A south-facing window is ideal indoors.
Water: Water sparingly in summer, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep almost dry in winter.
Soil/Nutrition: Use a gritty, well-draining cactus mix. Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted cactus fertiliser.
Humidity: Prefers dry air – avoid humid conditions.
Pruning & Propagation: Pads can be carefully removed with tongs and rooted in dry cactus soil. Wear gloves to avoid glochid irritation.
