Liquidambar styraciflua 'Lane Roberts'

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Lane Roberts' is a handsome deciduous tree celebrated for its rich autumn colour. Large, glossy green leaves have a distinctive star-shaped outline, turning deep crimson, burgundy and purple as the season changes. The darkest foliage can appear almost black, creating a dramatic display that lasts for several weeks.

Upright and pyramidal when young, this vigorous sweet gum develops a broader crown as it matures. Its impressive stature makes it an excellent specimen for larger gardens, parkland and spacious woodland planting. Small, inconspicuous spring flowers may be followed by rounded, prickly fruit clusters that add further seasonal detail.

Hardy and requiring minimal pruning, 'Lane Roberts' grows best in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Choose full sun for the strongest autumn colour, although partial shade is tolerated. Allow plenty of room for its mature crown to develop.
