Laurus nobilis
Laurus nobilis is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its glossy, aromatic dark green foliage and elegant habit. The strongly scented leaves are widely used in cooking, adding flavour to soups, stews, sauces and casseroles.
Small yellow-green flowers appear in spring and are followed by decorative dark berries, adding further seasonal interest. The flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while the evergreen foliage provides structure throughout the year.
Long-lived and easy to shape, Bay Laurel can be grown as a specimen shrub, clipped into formal topiary, trained as a hedge or grown in a large patio container. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, with some protection advisable during severe frosts.
