Hildewintera aureispina - A striking cactus with upright, columnar stems densely covered in fine golden spines. As it matures, it may cascade slightly, forming elegant clusters. In late spring to summer, it produces vivid orange to red tubular flowers that contrast beautifully with its golden body.
Key Characteristics:
- Growth Form: A columnar, branching cactus with stems that can grow upright or trail as they mature. The stems are densely coated in fine, golden-yellow spines, giving the plant a glowing appearance. Often used in hanging baskets or shallow pots to showcase its trailing habit.
- Flowers: Produces large, bright orange to red, tubular flowers in late spring and early summer. The blooms are showy and often appear in abundance along the upper part of mature stems.
- Habitat: Naturally grows in arid, mountainous areas with excellent drainage and strong sunlight. Native to Bolivia
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in full sun. Place in a bright, sunny spot indoors or outdoors during warmer months.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry. Allow to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to a bare minimum.
- Temperature: Prefers warm, dry conditions. Keep above 10°C (50°F) and protect from frost. Ideal range is 18°C to 30°C (64°F to 86°F).
- Soil: Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix. You can add sand or perlite to improve drainage further.
- Feeding: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
