Heliotropium arborescens
Heliotropium arborescens, commonly known as Heliotrope, is a wonderfully fragrant flowering plant prized for its clusters of rich purple-violet blooms and distinctive vanilla-like scent. Flowering continuously from early summer until the first frosts, it is a favourite for patios, containers and sunny borders.
The dense flower heads are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, while the lush green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the colourful blooms. Its intoxicating fragrance is strongest during warm evenings, making it an excellent choice near seating areas, pathways and entrances.
Heliotrope thrives in a warm, sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Although often grown as an annual in the UK, it can be overwintered in frost-free conditions and enjoyed for many years.
