Fagus sylvatica 'Black Swan' is a distinctive deciduous tree with a narrow, strongly weeping habit and rich purple foliage. The leaves emerge dark red-bronze in spring before deepening to an intense purple through summer, creating a dramatic vertical feature in the garden.

In autumn, the foliage develops warm golden-copper tones before falling to reveal smooth silver-grey bark and an elegant cascading framework of branches. Inconspicuous spring flowers may be followed by characteristic spiny beech fruits, adding further seasonal interest.

Best grown in full sun for the strongest foliage colour, 'Black Swan' performs well in moist but well-drained soil and is tolerant of a range of soil types, including chalk. Its relatively narrow spread makes it particularly useful as a specimen tree where height and architectural form are required without an overly broad canopy.
