Malus 'John Downie'

Crab Apple 'John Downie' is one of the finest traditional crab apples, widely grown for its outstanding ornamental value and superb fruit. In spring, it produces masses of soft white blossom flushed with pink, attracting bees and other pollinators. By late summer, the tree carries an abundant crop of striking orange-red, oval fruits that are ideal for making jellies and preserves, while also providing colour well into autumn.

Hardy, reliable, and vigorous, ‘John Downie’ forms an upright, pyramidal tree suitable for medium to large gardens. It offers excellent wildlife benefits and is especially valued in traditional orchards and cottage-style planting schemes. Its combination of decorative flowers, heavy fruiting, and dependable growth makes it one of the most popular crab apples in the UK.
