Berberis thunbergii 'Maria'
Berberis thunbergii 'Maria' is a striking deciduous shrub prized for its bright golden-yellow foliage and neat, upright columnar habit. New leaves emerge with attractive red tones in spring before turning vivid gold, retaining their strong colour throughout summer without greening as readily as many other yellow-leaved varieties.
Small yellow flowers appear in March and April, providing an early source of nectar for pollinating insects. In autumn, the foliage develops brilliant orange-red shades, while the dense, thorny growth provides useful shelter for garden birds and wildlife.
Hardy, robust and low maintenance, 'Maria' is ideal for bringing strong foliage contrast to mixed borders, smaller gardens and containers. It performs well in full sun or partial shade and makes an excellent vertical accent alongside darker-leaved shrubs and perennials.
